BMW assigned chassis number ranges for each 8 Series variation. Most of these numbers found their way to actual production while some did not.  In cases where a chassis number was not used, one or more of the following reasons apply:

• Market conditions prevented the full build out of the assigned chassis number range.
  
• Due to a production snafu, the car was eliminated from being offered to the public.
  
• Model/calendar year switchover necessitated restacking of the production run thereby eliminating the use of several chassis numbers.
  
• The car was produced and used internally for assembly line training, prototyping, or other related activities.
