Through the key help of a German 8er owner, the exterior colors for all 225 USA-spec 850CSi's are now 100% identified. The last remaining unidentified USA-spec 850CSi (chassis CD00002) with code 490 (Special Order Color) has now been identified as FJORDGRAU METALLIC (code 310).
Prior to this revelation, 224 of the 225 USA-spec 850CSi's were positively identified. One other USA-spec 850CSi also came in FJORDGRAU METALLIC (code 310), chassis CD00226 (see Note 1), and was long thought to be the only USA-spec 850CSi in this color. Now with this new information, it is now official that there were two USA-spec 850CSi's.
For the Inventory Project, this news means that we have 18 BMW 8 Series vehicles with "unidentified" special order colors (code 490) from 30,621 vehicles produced from July 1989 until production end May, 1999.
North American 8er Colors . . .
Note 1: There were 225 USA-spec 850CSi's produced from June 1993 through June 1995. The last USA-spec 850CSi was chassis number CD00230, which leads one to believe that there were 230 850CSi's. BMW's M Division began USA-spec 850CSi production with chassis CD00000 and briefly stopped at CD00003 (4 cars). BMW skipped CD00004, CD00005, CD00006, CD00007, CD00008, and CD00009. Production resumed with chassis CD00010 and concluded with chassis CD00230 without interuption in the numbering sequence.
